Crafternoon! Art Classes (Grades K-3rd)

Cost: $10 per class

Children will be led by the instructor through arts and crafts projects any kid will love! Weekly classes will be held on Mondays from 4:00pm - 5:30pm March 8th - May 17th.

To register call the Athens Community Center at 740-592-3325 or register online by clicking the links below.

Craft projects will be as follows:

March 8th: Gnome Homes

Students will get a chance to create their own gnome family out of wooden pegs, felt and wool roving. Their gnomes will live in a mushroom house they will build out of paper bowls plates and cups. This crowd pleasing craft is always a hit, allowing the students to personalize their gnomes and dwellings to give them a unique personality!

March 15th: Socktapus

A plain ol' sock is transformed into a cuddly under the sea creature in this adorable craft! Students will use a sock that they will paint, stuff and decorate in this no sew project. Glass jewels and glitter will top off the adornments for their socktapus.

March 22nd: Air Dry Clay Dragons

In this mixed media project, students will get to use some exciting materials to create their own mythical dragon. Air dry clay will be used to sculpt the body, while students will get to use card stock to make custom details for their beast!

March 29th: Spiral Doodle Snail

In a large scale drawing, kids will get a chance to create a large scale snail with a colorful shell. The concept of pattern creation will be introduced to students as they make multiple patterns on their snails' shell. Crayons and water colors will be used in a wax resist painting technique to finish the project.

April 5th: Japanese Carp Wind Socks

To celebrate the coming of spring, we will be making wind socks! The tissue paper wind socks will be decorated with permanent and washable markers. A spritz of water will be used to give the fish a wet appearance. Finally, students will adorn their fish's hanging cord with beads.

April 12th: Viking Ships

Students will travel the seas of their imagination by creating their own Viking Ship out of egg cartons and card stock. The history of Vikings and the designs of their boats and sails will be discussed. The students will be able to build a boat that represents them in a personal way.

April 19th: Pet Rocks

This craft is an oldie but goody, who doesn't love a classic pet rock! The students will get a chance to decorate their rock with acrylic paint, use googly eyes, and then create their own pet bed for their new friend.

April 26th: Birds in Yarn Nests

In this tactile craft project, students will get to explore airdry clay to create a bird and eggs. Then they will create a nest out of yarn and a balloon which will act as a mold. What better way to celebrate the spring season?

May 3rd: Sun Print Banners

With the weather becoming nice, and things beginning to grow, the students will create beautiful organic sun prints using cyanotype fabric. The grounds of the Community Center will provide leaves and twigs to create our prints. The banners will be finished off with a hanging branch and a beaded wire hanger.

May 10th: Pop Bottle Terrariums

A perfect ecosystem will be created when students make their own terrariums. Using recycled two liter bottles, and collage elements to decorate, kids will form their terrarium. Once complete, we will use soil and succulent plants to provide life to the ecosystem.

 May 17th: Food Houses

The photographer Mark Warner's work will be the inspiration for this imaginative drawing project. The students will construct a home of their dreams using only different types of foods. Salty, sweet, or gross, these structures are a perfect intro into draftsmanship!
