City Burning Permit
Outdoor Burning Regulations
Commercial outdoor fireplaces are permitted under the following conditions:
Not used within 20 feet of any structure, roadway, or alley.
Continually attended by a competent adult.
Must have an appropriate extinguishing agent nearby, such as a garden hose or a fire extinguisher [4-A rating].
Only clean, seasoned firewood may be used.
Outdoor fireplaces must be used as intended, with all screens in place, and secured to prevent being knocked over.
Self-constructed fire pits may be approved if contained with ½” spark arrestor screen or mesh. Only clean, seasoned firewood may be used.
No open burning is permitted within 90 feet of any structure, roadway, or alley.
No outdoor burning may last more than three hours.
No fuel area shall be greater than 3’ in diameter, nor 2’ in height
A permit must be obtained from the Athens Fire Department for any open burning beyond the 90 feet limit.
